An engine works by igniting a mixture of fuel of air inside an enclosed chamber called a combustion chamber. The way the fans in the two devices are powered is what makes them differ.

Supercharges are usually powered from belts or chains connected to a gear or wheel connected to the drive shaft. An electric supercharger uses power from the car battery to drive the fan which pressurizes the air. Electric super chargers will only increase horsepower on full throttle because this is when a valve controlling the amount of air to an engine is fully open.

The advantages of an electric supercharger over a traditional one is that they are simple to install and a lot cheaper. They simple attach on to the current air intake system of the engine and a power cable is attached to the engine. Although belt driven chargers provide more power gains an electric charger is still said to give an average 8.5% increase in power.

Turbos work in a similar fashion, with a fan compressing air and forcing it into the engine. However they are driven by exhaust gases rather than the engine directly. A turbine that is placed in the exhaust system is turned by the gases and this in turn powers the compressing fan. Turbos are considered to be slightly more efficient because waste energy is used to power them rather than power which could be directed towards the wheels.

By increasing the air flow into the combustion chamber they can increase the explosion creating more energy on the piston head. This is in turn means more horsepower which goes to the wheels hence making the car more powerful.
